50 Things You Should Know About Third Party Recruiters - Careers ...

One job search technique is using the services of a third party recruiter.? The term ?third party recruiter? goes by many names including outplacement firms, contingency agencies, executive search firms, retained search firms, employment agencies, headhunters, recruiters, and temp agencies.? These all fall under the umbrella of the ?staffing industry.?? The number of temporary employees is growing and this trend is expected to continue.? Temping can help you learn new skills and experience, build your network, open up options you had not previously considered and bridge employment gaps.? The goal is to get inside a company.? Here is my list of 50 things you should take into consideration when working with staffing agencies.

  1. Outplacement Firms contract with companies and provide career transition services for their displaced employees.
  2. Contingency Agencies are paid by the company when the agency?s candidate is hired.
  3. Retained Search Firms custom locates candidates for a company and are paid upfront or on a progress basis (retained basis).
  4. Employment Agencies are contracted by companies to find candidates for temporary or permanent positions.
  5. Headhunter/Recruiter/Consultant is the individual you will actually work with that is trying to fill a position for a company.
  6. Temporary (Temp) Agencies find candidates to fill temporary jobs and ?temp to perm? positions.
  7. Staffing agencies do the initial employment screening which saves the company time and money.
  8. Employers that experience an unexpected increase in business may favor hiring temps before hiring permanent workers.
  9. Companies are using staffing agencies to ?test drive? the performance of a temp before offering a permanent position.
  10. Having a temp gives the business a chance to evaluate how the person will fit in with the corporate culture and other employees.
  11. Hiring a temp provides time to identify any weaknesses that would not typically be evident in the interview process.
  12. Using a staffing agency can avoid the permanent commitment that a full-time employee requires, saving both time and money.
  13. Businesses use temps as needed or seasonally in many administrative, finance, management and technical functions.
  14. Check the phone book for a list of staffing agencies; also use the Internet to find additional information.
  15. Conduct a Google search on each staffing agency to learn more about their process and the types of position they recruit for.
  16. Agencies with offices nationally can help you explore opportunities for relocating.
  17. Network with your LinkedIn connections to learn more about the right staffing firms to use; use more than one agency.
  18. Be sure you know the fee arrangements before you engage with any staffing agency.
  19. Make sure your resume has been professionally critiqued before you submit it to a staffing agency.
  20. Schedule an appointment with a staffing agency representative.? Dress to impress, show your smile and give a firm handshake.
  21. Request specific information about the job including skills required, experience needed, the size of the company and location.
  22. Ask what areas/fields the staffing agency specializes in.
  23. Build a relationship with a staffing representative; they will more likely want to fill a position when they know who you are.
  24. If possible, pick up your paycheck at the staffing agency.? It?s an opportunity to build a stronger relationship with the staff.
  25. Your recruiter will be able to review your resume and give you suggestions on how to improve it.? This is a valuable service.
  26. Understand that a staffing agency?s primary goal is to fill a position.? Don?t confuse their role with the role of a career counselor.
  27. A staffing agency is serving their clients, but offering you an assignment.? Be sure you represent them professionally.
  28. Even though you are a temp, your productivity, performance and attitude are important.
  29. Don?t conduct your job search on your temporary employer?s time.
  30. Some staffing agencies offer health and other benefits.? Be sure to ask.
  31. Temping can be challenging, exciting and interesting or it can be mind-numbing labor.? Give your very best either way.
  32. Some agencies have skills training to prepare employees for their assignments; others expect you to hit the ground running.
  33. Agencies fill opening in the areas of industrial, clerical, legal IT, accounting, healthcare, and up to CFO, COO, and CEO.
  34. Working with a staffing agency does not guarantee placement in a job.? It?s one of many techniques to use in your job search.
  35. Don?t abdicate the tasks of the job search to a recruiter who is busy working with lots of job seekers.
  36. Reducing or stopping your networking efforts once you start using a staffing agency is a huge mistake.
  37. Recruiters have contacts in the business community which only extends your networking outreach.
  38. Temp jobs can often be the answer when your cash reserves are running low.
  39. Temping can give you experience in careers you might not have otherwise thought of trying ? without a long-term commitment.
  40. Remember if you don?t like your temporary assignment, your next opportunity is right around the corner.
  41. Having the flexibility from temping can work well for your job search and personal priorities.
  42. Signing up with a staffing agency is usually quick and easy, much of which can be done online.
  43. Temps are employees of the staffing agency, not the business that is using their services.
  44. According to the American Staffing Association (ASA) the average temporary tenure assignment is three to four months.
  45. The average temporary employee earns about $12/hour according to the ASA.
  46. Approximately 79 percent of staffing employees work full-time according to the ASA.
  47. From 2009 ? 2011, staffing firms created more jobs than any other industry, a half million, according to the US BLS.
  48. The ASA notes that 12 million Americans will work at some point during the course of the year in as a temp or contract employee.
  49. The staffing industry generated approximately $97.1 billion in sales in 2010 as recorded by the ASA.
  50. Temping is not a step down.? It?s money, connections, a resume gap stopper and an opportunity to get your foot in the door.
