You may have already heard the buzz about augmented reality, but let's put it in an automotive context. If you do a lot of driving, this free app is a worthy download, as long as you're not expecting luxury-car level accuracy.

Interface, Live View, and Collision Detection
For this review, I tested iOnRoad Augmented Driving 1.1.1.3 on a?Verizon Wireless HTC Rezound. The only thing you need to get started is a windshield mount for your Android phone, since the app needs to "see" what's ahead at all times in order to function. Any generic windshield mount should do; I listed this as a con (above) mainly because it's not something most people have around unless they're already using their phone for in-car navigation.

When you first fire up iOnRoad, it takes about a minute to adjust to its surroundings. The live view is accurate and updates beautifully, just like when using the phone as a viewfinder in the Camera app. It highlights the current lane of travel in green. In my tests, the app also figured out my current speed, much like any current GPS navigation app would. Tap the Menu button, and you'll head over to the main menu, which features eight large icons for cuing up navigation, music, and other tasks in the background. With the live view visible, you can also tap Navigation on the left to start Google Maps Navigation; then both will run simultaneously.

The collision detection works just like the options you'd find on an upscale luxury car. With the phone mounted on the windshield, the app can tell you if it detects a possible collision with another vehicle ahead, even when the app is running in the background. In practice, this worked well, though I should note that there was only so much testing I could do here, as each "test" involved me putting myself in a somewhat dangerous situation to see if the app figured out what was going on. In other words: Don't try this at home (but by all means, try the app).

Headway Distance Monitoring and Photo Snapshots
The headway distance monitoring is similar, but instead of looking for possible accidents, the app simply measures how far away the nearest car is in front of you, and shows you with a graphical readout. It also sounds an alert if that car is too close for safe braking in the event of a sudden stop, based on your own speed of travel. In testing, this feature also worked well. Once iOnRoad became acquainted with my surroundings, it figured out there was a Hummer stretch limo ahead of me. The app locked onto it and then put up a real-time readout showing how many feet away I was. When I got too close to the Hummer's rear bumper, the app popped up a warning and sounded an alarm based on my current speed, the Hummer's speed, and the distance between us.

On the other hand, I had less success with the lane departure warning. I tested it by popping on my blinker and then beginning to drift out of the lane I was in; the blinker was to notify other motorists, as once again I didn't want to cause an accident. I did eventually get the app to sound the lane departure warning, but several attempted drifts left the app completely silent.

Another useful feature: You can take snapshots using the main interface with a single button tap. This way you can photograph an interesting landmark, car, or other feature you may want to save for later, without having to fumble with starting up the phone's camera app. iOnRoad also includes something of a game called Safety Point Counter, which lets you rack up points based on how long you can drive with the fewest amount of safety alerts. The app immediately begins adding points to your score as it's running, with a readout in the top center of the display. This seems fairly pointless, but hey, you can just ignore it.

Car Locator, Other Features, and Conclusions
iOnRoad offers numerous other features, though none are as game-changing as the collision detection and other real-time warnings. The Car Locator does what other apps already do, but with a twist: It records your parked car's GPS location and also takes a photo snapshot. It then places a marker on a map, so when you return to find your car, you can view your location versus the marker on the map, as well as pop up a photo of where you parked the car.

Back at home, you can log into your personal Web dashboard, which saves and tracks the various alerts from your last trip. It also saves snapshots from the road and lets you share driving data with others. The SMS and notification narrator does exactly what it sounds like: It reads incoming texts and notification alerts out loud to you. The app also has an automatic driving detector, which figures out if you've somehow stepped into your car and started driving. If so, it activates itself. I didn't have a bicycle handy to test this feature and try and throw it off, but it's a nice touch.

Overall, iOnRoad offers a bevy of interesting features you won't find in typical GPS navigation apps. I don't want to damn it with faint praise by calling it a fun distraction, because it actually enhances driving safety. Over time, I'll be keeping an eye on this app to see how it evolves; for now, it's worth installing, as long as you're not expecting it to be as effective as the crash avoidance systems found on $60,000 luxury cars. Considering it's free and fun to use, and this is its first non-beta iteration, we can cut it some slack.

New field of chemistry has potential for making drugs inside patients -- and more

ScienceDaily (Mar. 27, 2012) ? The traditional way of making medicines from ingredients mixed together in a factory may be joined by a new approach in which doctors administer the ingredients for a medicine separately to patients, and the ingredients combine to produce the medicine inside patients' bodies.

That's one promise from an emerging new field of chemistry, according to the scientist who founded it barely a decade ago. Carolyn Bertozzi, Ph.D., spoke on the topic -- bioorthogonal chemistry -- in San Diego on March 27 in delivering the latest Kavli Foundation Innovations in Chemistry Lecture at the 243rd National Meeting & Exposition of the American Chemical Society (ACS).

Bertozzi explained that the techniques of bioorthogonal chemistry may fundamentally change the nature of drug development and diagnosis of disease, so that the active ingredients for medicines and substances to image diseased tissue are produced inside patients.

"Suppose a drug doesn't reach diseased tissue in concentrations high enough to work," Bertozzi said, citing one example of the potential of the new chemistry. "Maybe it is an oral drug that doesn't get absorbed very well into the blood through the stomach. You can imagine a scenario in which doctors administer two parts of the molecule that makes up the drug. The two units reach diseased tissue in large amounts or get absorbed through the stomach just fine. Then they recombine, producing the actual drug in the patient's body. Bioorthogonal chemistry is chemistry for life?literally!"

Bertozzi explained that bioorthogonal chemistry opens the door to creating new proteins, fats and sugars directly inside living cells without harming them. The field emerged from her frustration in the late 1990s with the lack of tools available to see sugars on the surfaces of living cells. Chains of these sugars, called glycans, sit on the surfaces of cells in the body and control the doorways through which different molecules enter. When a disease-causing virus enters and infects a cell, for instance, proteins on the virus's surface attach to certain glycans.

"To do that, we had to come up with a chemical reaction that would be really selective, only targeting the sugar of interest and the fluorescent probes that we delivered to it," said Bertozzi. The chemicals also couldn't stick to other biomolecules that the researchers didn't want to see.

That turned out to be a tall order, indeed. "We pulled all of our big textbooks off the shelves and flipped through them to see if there was something out there that fit our criteria," she said. Those criteria were essentially the conditions inside a living cell or living organism such as a mouse -- a reaction that could occur in water at pH 7 and at 98.6 degrees Fahrenheit. The reaction also couldn't interfere with all the other biomolecules in a cell or organism that keep it alive.

"It was a pretty restrictive set of conditions that a traditionally trained organic chemist like me never had to work within," she explained. That's because these types of reactions are usually performed in very clean, dry test tubes and flasks under conditions that the chemist can control. A living cell or organism, with all its water, proteins, fats, sugars and metabolites is very messy and uncontrollable by comparison.

Bertozzi and her team at the University of California, Berkeley, went on to develop a slew of reactions that can add fluorescent labels to biomolecules.

Now, the field is exploding, with her group and others reporting new bioorthogonal chemical reactions every year that help researchers see sugars, fats, proteins, and even DNA and RNA, that can't be seen using conventional methods. Researchers currently use the reactions not only to see where a biomolecule is within a living cell or organism, but also to determine when a biomolecule is made and what it binds to. Researchers also are using the methods to add things besides labels, like drugs, to various biomolecules. Some of the chemicals used for the reactions are currently available separately or in kits.

Several of Bertozzi's reactions are patented, and some are licensed to companies, including Redwood Bioscience, a company she co-founded with David Rabuka, Ph.D. The company is focused on bringing this technology to the clinic.

The scientists acknowledged funding from the National Institutes of Health and the Howard Hughes Medical Institute.

Miley Cyrus is putting those engagement rumors to rest. On Monday (March 26), the Internet was abuzz that Cyrus and her "Hunger Games" star boyfriend Liam Hemsworth were going to tie the knot after photos surfaced of her wearing a large sparkler on her ring finger.

But Cyrus took to Twitter on Monday to shoot down the rumors, saying, "I'm not engaged. I've worn this same ring on this finger since November! People just wanna find something to [talk] about! It's a topaz people!"

Speculation began last week after Cyrus tweeted a photo of her new manicure and the ring. Most recently, she was spotted sporting the large stone on Saturday as the two posed for pictures on the red carpet at Muhammad Ali's Celebrity Fight Night XVVIII in Phoenix.

Even though they won't be planning a wedding anytime soon, the couple, who have been dating on and off since 2009, have a lot to be excited about. "The Hunger Games" had the third-biggest opening weekend of all time, beating out all of the "Twilight Saga" movies when it raked in $155 million.

Hemsworth and Cyrus will next be seen together on an upcoming episode of MTV's "Punk'd," where the former "Hannah Montana" star tells her boyfriend that two naked people have locked themselves in her car, a prank Hemsworth doesn't seem to be too fond of.

"I knew she was doing the show. I honestly thought she had enough respect for me not to do me, and she got me really good," Hemsworth recently told Ellen DeGeneres. "Your girlfriend comes running around and she's yelling hysterically and you see two naked people in your car... I think my instincts were pretty right."

"Undefeated'' needs less of what we know we've seen (the football stuff) and more of the players' and coaches' lives, which even if we feel we've seen, we haven't.

What makes this a terrific film is how much we care about the players.

For all its good intentions, the film, like its main subject, is a tourist, earning trust as it earnestly captures the incredible struggles of these young men, but never digging deep enough to actually make the story theirs.

A touching documentary that offers a field-level portrait of male mentorship, compassion and unvarnished hope - all without a Hollywood ending.

It is a powerful reminder of the difference one person can make -- and of the consequences when no one is willing to make that difference.

What lifts 'Undefeated' above other sports docs is the remarkable force of Bill Courtney's personality.

It may call to mind The Blind Side or Remember the Titans, but there's no Hollywood glitz in the blighted burg of Manassas.

I regret that we don't meet more of Courtney's players, but that might have required a miniseries rather than a movie. And "Undefeated" makes sure the coach who is its central figure is more complex and fascinating than most fictional movie characters.

The hardened inner-city kids here are far more authentic than anything Hollywood can offer, and as a result the film has a raw emotional weight that commercial features rarely achieve.
